Part of me can’t believe I’m doing this… Below is my July income and traffic report, along with a recap of my July goals.

Something you should know about me – I *hate* feeling vulnerable. HATE it. I don’t want others to see me as weak, or unqualified. And I certainly don’t want to admit when I need help – or own up to my failures. So laying all of this information on the table makes me feel extremely exposed.

So why am I doing it?

Because if other bloggers hadn’t shared their income reports before me, I probably would’ve given up on this blog long ago. In fact, there were many days where reading income reports was the only thing to keep me going.

So I’m hoping this will encourage other bloggers to continue on. And, at the very least, help others learn from my failures (and successes!).

– THE NUMBERS –

*First: I’ve mentioned this before, and I’ll say it again. Blogging income can be extremely erratic. There are some months I’m lucky to make $200, and some weeks where I can bring in over $1,700. My goal is to become more and more consistent.*

– TRAFFIC NUMBERS –

My traffic numbers for the month of July – via Google Analytics. No big shockers or takeaways here. The only thing that caught me off guard, in a good way, was my average time on each page increased from 58-seconds in June, to 2:28 in July! A HUGE improvement!

– JULY TAKEAWAYS –

Overall, I worked hard last month. Really hard. I was strategic with my time, and having a list of goals was EXTREMELY helpful to me! It kept me focused and I knew exactly what needed to be done every day. Here are my July goals, and my takeaways from each one…

Blogging Goals

Content / Creation Goals

Content: Write 2+ new blog posts each week. (I’ve had this goal many times before and always come up short!) Included in this goal, I would like to write my first sponsored post – AND – re-do one post from the past to give it an updated look. Definite win on this one! I posted twice a week – AND – updated one old post (find it here: First Day of School Signs). The only thing I didn’t accomplish was a sponsored post – but not because I didn’t try! Throughout July I applied to four different sponsored opportunities. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any. One company even wrote back saying to contact them again when I had a larger “social presence”. Ouch. But hey, live and learn, right? I’m going to keep on trucking and see if we can get one next month!

Create: Publish one specialty post (with a free download) and promote on television. You bet! Another win! I created an original template (find it here: Birthday Posters) – AND – promoted it on television (find it here).

Traffic + Income Goals

Income: July is historically my lowest income-making month. My goal is to bring in at least $500 by updating sidebar ads and checking Google analytics weekly to spot and capitalize on trends. Fail. Epic fail…but not by lack of trying! I knew in advance, July is my lowest revenue month. By far. And I barely made it half way to my goal. On the plus side – I did TRIPLE my income from last July – so I’m going to chalk this up as a win!

Pageviews / Analytics: Get 20,742 pageviews this month (double my traffic from last July). Another flop. But I can hear my inner cheerleader chanting “progress over perfection” – over, and over, and over again! Despite being my lowest income-making month, July is also my lowest traffic month. Last year I had 10,371 page views. This year, I increased to 13,490 page views. That number may be lower than my goal, but it is a 30% increase from last year. So again, I’ll chalk it up as a win!

Social Media Goals

Facebook: Post to Facebook every day. I found a 31 Day social media challenge and can’t wait to give some of the ideas a try! Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! I missed the first day of July (way to start on the right foot, eh?), but I posted for the remainder of the month. And some days I posted twice! As a result, I gained 34 new followers. Success!

Instagram: Try Instagram’s live video feature and give a behind-the-scenes look to followers at least once a week. Crash and burn. I didn’t even attempt this one – I’m terrible. I have no good reason, except I was focused on other activities I thought would give me a better return on my investment. Maybe next month.

E-mail List: Grow my e-mail list by 30 people – AND – send out my first e-mail in over a year (yikes! I know!). I switched to ConvertKit last month and can’t wait to see what it can do for me! I’m going to call this a success AND a failure. First, I didn’t just grow my e-mail list by 30 people…it grew by 500 PEOPLE!! Holy smokes! I honestly don’t believe it myself. I exceeded my goal by 1666%!! Now, for the failure. I *did not* send out a single e-mail to these new subscribers. It’s my #1 goal for next month. Again, things started taking off and I got cold feet. I really need to get my act together next month!

Blog Improvements

Pages: Update “About Me” page with new information and photos. Add a subscription landing page. Done! Easy peasy, lemon squeeze. (Shout out to my fellow blogger, Kim, for the wonderful insights on creating an “About Me” page!)

Sidebar: Update “About Me” sidebar section and add a subscriber sign-up widget. Done!

Maintenance: Disable pingback feature. Done! (This took about two seconds to complete, so I feel like I cheated a bit – but it’s done, nonetheless!)

So that’s it – my month in a nutshell. Now I’m off to do some deep breathing exercises to calm my nerves!
