Happy Dolls and The Birthday Project

I first heard about “The Birthday Project” from a close friend of mine. The idea is simple: on your birthday, you do one random act of kindness for every year of your life. So if you’re turning 30, you do 30 random acts of kindness.

This sort of thing is right up my alley. As my son’s first birthday approached, I knew I wanted to start his “Birthday Project” immediately (you’re never too young to give back, am I right?).

But finding a way for a one-year-old to give back is a little challenging. At this age his strengths include eating, sleeping, and pooping… not exactly the recipe for a great community project. Thankfully, I found the perfect solution: Happy Dolls!

You’re probably thinking, “What on earth are Happy Dolls?”

Happy Dolls are blank canvas dolls a child can decorate and write dreams or messages of hope on. Then the Happy Dolls are sent around the world to bring smiles and warm wishes to other children.

Originally, I was pretty nervous about this project. Our whole family was coming to Casey’s birthday party and I could already hear the men asking, “You want us to decorate dolls?”

But the dolls were a HUGE HIT! Everyone helped decorate (even the men!), my son was able to contribute to the project, and at the end of the day we had four beautiful dolls to package up and send on their way.

The thing that impressed me most was the (amazing) Happy Doll team! In my original e-mail inquiry I mentioned this was for my son’s birthday. When we got our Happy Doll box in the mail, this amazing group of people had wrapped each kit in birthday paper and included a personalized Birthday Card addressed to Casey, signed by several members of the Happy Doll Team! I was blown away with their kindness.

Even after the kits were returned I received a very kind e-mail thanking us for the dolls and commenting on how creative and cute they were.

So, without further ado, I’d like to introduce our Happy Dolls:

To make your own Happy Dolls follow these simple steps:

1. Order your Happy Doll kit (kits are $25 and include a blank doll and fabric markers, click here for more information).

2. Decorate your dolls and send them back. (A return box, shipping label and return postage are all included in each kit.)

3. Track your doll’s journey as it travels around the world!

(Happy Dolls is a non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible.)

If you have children I highly recommend Happy Dolls! (If you have questions please ask!)
