Let me start by saying, I know this post is about three four months too late. But in my defense, during that time I’ve given birth, adjusted to having three children, my husband did some extensive traveling for March Madness, and someone stole the majority of my blogging equipment… So my mantra these days is: I’m doing the best I can!

Now that I’ve laid out the excuses, let’s get to the fun stuff! This is a ridiculously fun project I created for my kiddos for the New Year. In fact, it’s so fun it’s still hanging on our wall. (Partially because I love it – partially because I’m a busy mom and taking it down hasn’t been a priority. Who feels me?)

So here it is – our 2016 Poster! In a nutshell, I wrote the name of each month on a sheet of paper and we all sat down together to remember our year. It was the perfect New Year’s Eve activity – especially with little ones!

It wasn’t anything elaborate or fancy, and at the end of the day it was mostly covered in doodles and badly drawn pictures. But we had fun remembering everything that happened and writing down what was special to us.

While my husband and I tended to remember the “bigger” things (birthdays, anniversaries, vacations), it was fun to hear what was a “big” deal to our children…

My three-year-old was really proud she learned to use the potty and of her new friends at preschool.

My five-year-old was more excited about the little things… Like the time he was the only student who showed up for intramurals and got to play Mr. Clark one-on-one. Or when his dad taught him the lyrics to “The Boxer” by Simon and Garfunkel. (Honestly – both of those made my heart melt a little bit!)

It was a hit in our household and we’ll definitely be doing it again next year! To keep things consistent, I made a template we can use again and again. (If you want to try this project yourself you can grab the free download below!)

To make your own...

This project was extremely easy to do:

  1. Download the free template (link is at the bottom of this post) and print onto white paper.
  2. Use markers, crayons, or colored pencils to fill in your memories from the year. You can do this all at once at the end of the year, or fill it out as the year goes on.
  3. Have your children add extra doodles or pictures of what they remember.
  4. Tape the pages together and hang up!

To avoid utter chaos, we started with a blank page. Then, one-by-one, we added our memories. My husband and I went first to give my children some ideas, then we let them go in and fill in the blanks.

I don’t want to sound too cheesy, but it really was a fun activity for us. We were all together, laughing and remembering everything that happened in the last twelve months. It was a very special night for our family.

Here are all of our memories:
